![]() | Hedge Laying
Laying hedges, or plashing, is the traditional way of rejuvenating and strengthening hedges. There are many different styles, with the most common around here being Midland; this is laying the pleachers (stems) back at an angle into a line of stakes held together with a binding of willow or hazel. |
Many hedges can be layed, from field boundaries to garden hedges.
If your hedge is wider than it is tall, or upon inspection it is a mass of dead looking branches with a thin layer of leaves and you're in the Lincoln area, please contact us via the email address below if you'd like us to look with a view to laying it. |
Coppicing
Our woodland management plan is concentrated on returning the woodland to a regular rotational management of coppice with standards.
Coppicing has been carried out for many centuries to ensure a continual supply of wood, for a variety of purposes; from hurdles to charcoal for the blast furnaces of the industrial revolution. Our coppice is primarily hazel on a seven year rotation to produce straight rods for stakes and woodland crafts.

The standards in the woodland include oak, ash, field maple and sallow.
Overstood coppice has lost much of its wildlife diversity, and it's great to see the spread of woodland flowers into areas opened up by last year's clearance. Well maintained coppice will always have open areas as well as more dense woodland, depending on where in the rotation each section falls. |
